Luxor by Plane: Karnak, Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut

Overview

Fly to discover the largest open-air museum in the world, with flights included and an official Italian-speaking Egyptologist guide. The temple complex of Karnak, the crossing of the Nile, the Valley of the Kings with three tombs to enter, the temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon — all in a single day.

Day programme

1. 1

   Departure by plane: early-morning hotel pick-up, airport transfer and a domestic flight to Luxor. Welcome by the Egyptologist guide and touring in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle.

2. 2

   Karnak Temple (east bank): a visit to the grandest temple complex of antiquity — the monumental avenue of ram-headed sphinxes and the immense Hypostyle Hall with 134 carved columns.

3. 3

   Nile crossing and lunch: an atmospheric passage between the two banks on a typical motorboat, then a buffet lunch with traditional dishes in a restaurant on the Nile.

4. 4

   Valley of the Kings (west bank): entry to the legendary royal necropolis and exploration inside 3 pharaonic tombs decorated with hieroglyphs and colours intact after millennia.

5. 5

   Temple of Hatshepsut: a visit to the spectacular mortuary temple of the only female pharaoh, set on three terraces in the rock face of Deir el-Bahari.

6. 6

   Colossi of Memnon: a photo stop in front of the colossal monolithic statues of Amenhotep III, almost 18 metres tall.

7. 7

   Alabaster workshop: a short demonstration stop to see the stone worked by hand using ancient local techniques.

   Return flight: transfer to Luxor airport, evening flight to Sharm El Sheikh and a shuttle straight back to your resort.

What to bring

• Original passport with a tourist visa for Egypt — the “Sinai Only” stamp alone is not valid outside Sinai, the full $30 visa is required
• A breakfast box booked at reception the evening before
• Comfortable walking shoes (rocky, sandy ground)
• Light clothing, sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen — Luxor gets very hot
• Cash for drinks with meals and souvenirs
