St Catherine's Monastery & Dahab

Overview

A fascinating journey into the heart of Sinai to visit one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world, a UNESCO site at the foot of Mount Sinai. The Burning Bush, the Basilica of the Transfiguration, the Well of Moses and the Icon Museum, followed by a traditional lunch by the sea and free time among the Bedouin markets of Dahab.

Day programme

   06:00 – 06:30

   Pick-up from your hotel in a comfortable air-conditioned minivan and a scenic journey through the majestic mountain massifs of Sinai (about two and a half hours).

   Arrival at the foot of Mount Sinai: a short scenic walk to the entrance of the imposing fortified walls built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century.

   Guided visit of the monastery: the Burning Bush, the legendary biblical shrub where God spoke to Moses; the Basilica of the Transfiguration, a Byzantine masterpiece with ancient icons and splendid 6th-century mosaics; the Well of Moses, the historic natural spring tied to biblical tradition; and the Icon Museum, an extraordinary collection of codices and sacred icons unique in the world, when accessible.

   Lunch and shopping in Dahab: a stop in the charming coastal town with a traditional lunch served in a seafront restaurant and free time to wander the Bedouin markets.

   16:30 – 17:00

   Return and direct arrival at your hotel in Sharm El Sheikh.

What to bring

• Clothing appropriate to a sacred place: shoulders and knees strictly covered for men and women — long trousers or skirts below the knee, a headscarf is recommended for women
• Original passport (mandatory at the road checkpoints)
• Comfortable closed trainers (cobbled ground)
• A breakfast box requested at the hotel the evening before
• Sunglasses, a hat and cash for drinks or purchases
